The “Will It Fit In” app is a specialized, lightweight utility tool designed to help users scientifically estimate and optimize space for moving trucks and storage units. By allowing you to input your actual inventory, the tool helps you determine the correct truck or storage unit size required, preventing the common mistake of renting too much or too little space. It uses professional packing principles—such as the “stacking coefficient”—to account for the irregular shapes of household items, ensuring you can plan your move efficiently and save money.

Pro Tips: How to Pack a Truck/Storage Unit Like a Professional

Ensure everything stays safe, secure, and fits perfectly during your move.

  • Build the “I-Beam” Base: Place heavy furniture (fridges, washing machines, tall dressers) firmly against the cab wall (front) first. Tie them with strap rails to create a secure, stable front wall.
  • Stack Vertically & Tightly: Stack sturdy cardboard boxes on top of heavy appliances and bureaus. Put heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter/fragile items on top. Never leave empty airspace!
  • Roll Mattresses on Sides: Place long queen/king mattresses and box springs vertically along the side walls. They act as protective padding cushions for other delicate wood furniture items.

How do I calculate what moving truck size I need?

As a rule of thumb: a 10-foot truck is built for studio or dorm moves (under 400 cu ft of cargo). A 15-foot truck easily handles small 1-2 bed homes (up to 800 cu ft). Larger 3-4 bedroom homes require a 20-foot or 26-foot truck. Our visual packing tool helps you test your actual inventory on standard truck floors to avoid renting the wrong size.

Will my furniture fit in a 10′ × 10′ storage unit?

A 10′ × 10′ storage unit provides 100 square feet of floor space and typically 8-foot ceilings, equaling 800 cubic feet. This holds the contents of a standard 1-to-2 bedroom apartment. By packing strategically—loading large beds vertically, stacking uniform boxes, and wrapping couches—you can easily accommodate appliances, dressers, and tables.

Why can’t I achieve 100% packing efficiency?

In a physical truck or storage locker, items are irregular. Mattresses, couches, and bicycles leave non-orthogonal spaces (air pockets) that boxes cannot fill. Professional packers usually assume a “stacking coefficient” or volumetric packing efficiency of 70% to 80%. If our calculator shows your 3D volume usage exceeds 80%, we advise getting the next size up.

How do I handle extremely heavy or delicate items?

Delicate items like televisions, mirrors, and glass tables should never be placed flat on the floor or under heavy loads. Pack them vertically inside specialty wardrobe boxes or secure them between soft mattresses. Put heavy appliances on the floor directly beneath lighter cartons to prevent crushing during transit.
